Comes now the story of Nicoma the god.
Nicoma was born in the consciousness of five different people. They were from different regions of the world and were of different genders. The moon felt it would be interesting to see a singular consciousness expressed through multiple individuals and so endowed them a god in parts.
While they were all given different names, as they grew up they insisted on being called the same name, Nicoma. Though they spoke separate languages and were raised in different cultures, Nicoma was always connected in one, sentient mentality. But having to share consciousness over great distances and various languages was confusing, chaotic and unnerving.
In youth, the many Nicoma developed a single need: control. Their spread-out life made it difficult, and at times impossible, to focus. This fueled a desire for centralization not just over themself but others.
As Nicoma came of age, their five iterations sought different professions. One became a police officer. One became a lawyer. One became an entrepreneur. One became a journalist. One became a sex worker. Each version required a specific education and life experience. Having the five perspectives with one mind allowed each of them to share the skills learned.
Once Nicoma felt they were sufficiently skilled, they set out to meet up together and set up a community of the same mind. They moved to the same city and decided to pursue wealth as a team. The operation would be an exercise in synergy by consolidating their lives.
The moon took note of their work and was concerned Nicoma was working as a unit. It warned Nicoma to use their power constructively. Nicoma ignored the moon’s warnings.
In a coordinated effort, Nicoma was able to set up a business in the financial markets. The lawyer set up a company to purchase real estate property cheaply, usually through foreclosure. The police officer would enforce the foreclosure by speeding up the eviction process. The entrepreneur would purchase the property and develop it. The journalist would create content promoting and marketing the developments. The sex worker, admittedly, had little role in the process but was useful from time to time to bribe opponents and potential clients.
Nicoma worked relentlessly for several years and founded an empire. WIth each development, they would funnel more capital into the operation, further expanding their empire.
As their company reached a new peak, they ran into an obstacle. They were vying for a property to turn into a retail center. When the lawyer filed a legal motion to compel a foreclosure but was met with a countersuit from a politician. The property seemed worthless, was once used as farmland, and Nicoma did not understand the resistance.
Nicoma, as the lawyer, confronted the opposing counsel about the property and the attorney told him his client was the famous indestructible god. Like Nicoma, the god also had tremendous wealth from many decades of sold out shows demonstrating his immortality. While Nicoma was also a god, they were not immortal. They seethed at their colleague god for working against them but yet Nicoma was also inspired.
Realizing that wealth had limitations of power, Nicoma decided they had to branch their operation into politics. The lawyer, naturally, planned to pursue political office. The entrepreneur, obviously, would take over the financing of campaigning. The cop, the journalist and the sex worker would work as a team in counter operation working against the lawyer’s political opponents. The sex worker would embed themself with a candidate. The cop would catch the sex worker and candidate in the act. The journalist would report the story in the media.
As with their business, their political scheme worked and eventually they were able to become the leader of their nation. They obtained the power and control they always desired to have as children. While they did not abuse that power they didn’t govern fairly.
Years passed and their rule grew into a malaise. The public had grown tired of their relentless pursuit of power. At every turn, Nicoma took away their people’s rights and some were imprisoned without due cause.
The indestructible god took note and felt compelled to challenge Nicoma. As a well-known public figure, he began to speak out against them, garnering attention that motivated the country against Nicoma. While the citizens’ rights had been severely restricted during their rule they still possessed the power of election. The negative publicity from the rival god hurt Nicoma’s image and they would go on to lose the next election, losing their political power.
With their image now damaged permanently, Nicoma would not be able to return to governance. The lawyer sought to speak with the indestructible god and confront him. When they met, Nicoma demanded to know why he had worked against them. The god told them that in his long life, he had seen too many despots ruin too many peoples’ lives and he could not stand for it. The lawyer threatened to hurt the god but the indestructible being laughed at him. He told them he would forget their names and their actions over the course of his long life.
The lawyer left and Nicoma was distraught. As time went on, they felt bitter about the course of events though they continued to find solace by starting other business operations. They worked in financial markets, energy and media. They could never regain their former glory. But as they approached old age, they realized power was fleeting. Even if they could not enjoy power over others, they maintained control over their life and were satisfied.
